Excellence celebrated at glittering awards

Coleg Sir Gâr celebrated its first Achievement of Excellence Awards evening with a glittering ceremony aimed at celebrating the best of the best.

Held at the Stradey Park Hotel Llanelli, over 50 learners, ranging from those studying apprenticeships, degrees, extended diplomas and A-levels, were recognised for their significant achievements.

National and international sporting honours were also celebrated along with performance honours, enterprise initiatives and international success at World Skills competitions.

Former hospitality supervision student Elizabeth Forkuoh, who won a medal of excellence at WorldSkills Abu Dhabi, travelled from Scotland where she is working at the prestigious Gleneagles hotel, to receive an award. Alfie Hopkin who competed in web design in Abu Dhabi, also brought his family to celebrate his award for international achievement. 

Former Coleg Sir Gâr lecturer and actor Ioan Hefin, who has appeared in Hinterland, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Netflix productions, took to the stage as compère for the evening to introduce the awards and highlight individual learner journeys.

Glenn Jones, director of learner progression said: “It was a very proud evening for parents, guardians, friends and college members of staff who were present to recognise and acknowledge the standards of excellence achieved by our learners.”
