Programme Description:

UCAS Code: C22

Course Code: W232

The Textiles: Knit, Weave and Mixed Media programme at Carmarthen School of Art, Coleg Sir Gar is unique within Wales providing the opportunity to explore weaving, knitting and mixed media finishing processes. Drawing and digital design form the foundation for development. The skills-based approach provides knowledge and an experimental base from which students can develop either a mixed media approach or choose to specialise. The curriculum ensures that students have the opportunity to experience a range of career opportunities through a variety of market contexts: fashion fabrics, designer-maker/craft, accessories, textiles for interiors and textile art.

The course is dynamic, challenging and creative, run by tutors who are recognised specialists in their field. We aim for our students to graduate with exemplary bodies of work that will lead to rewarding jobs, self-employment or higher academic study.

The course ensures that students develop a broad portfolio demonstrating their personal identity. They will learn transferable skills for employability within the creative industries: many former students have well-established careers regionally, nationally and internationally. We aim to foster and nurture practical skills with academic rigor, culminating in a professional exhibition and portfolio of work.

Programme Features:

This is a very well-resourced program with workshop facilities that include: traditional handlooms (available per student), computer-driven looms, rug-tufting, domestic and industrial knit machines, a dye lab, laser cutting, laser welding and ultrasonic joining; alongside standard printing, embellishing and stitching equipment. A wide range of commercial design software is used on both Mac and PC platforms. We also offer a high level of tutor expertise in knitted garment design and product construction for those that aspire to turn their textiles into fully realised end products.

Projects across the first and second year of study span interior, fashion and applied art outcomes. National and international competition and live project briefs are a vital component of the course giving real professional and entrepreneurial experience, as well as the opportunity to win prizes, exhibition opportunities and work placements.  The final year of study is entirely self-directed with weekly tutorial sessions, allowing students to create a personal body of work which demonstrates individuality, innovation and flair. The course prides itself on not having an ‘in-house style’: all students are treated as individuals and encouraged to create work that is reflective of their unique interests and aspirations.  Students have dedicated work spaces within a well-equipped, light and airy studio. Class sizes are small allowing for a high level of tutor interaction and easy access to resources.

We aim to help students realise their full potential within a supportive, friendly, nurturing and creative working environment.
