Programme Description:

GCSE English Language is a broad, coherent and worthwhile course of study, developing learners’ key skills in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Programme Features:
  • Learners will be expected to read, discuss and write responses to a range of reading texts, including fiction and non-fiction texts.
  • Learners will also develop their writing skills to write a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. Spelling, punctuation and grammar is a large part of this course and developing SPaG skills will be undertaken extensively.
  • Oracy skills will also be developed and candidates will be supported in their preparation for an individual presentation and group discussion.
Progression and Employment:

Following a course in GCSE English Language should prepare learners to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities and career choices; and to use language and participate effectively in society and employment.

Programme Content:

Oracy, reading and writing skills will be recognised in GCSE English Language. Learners will develop their ability to use English as active and informed citizens and be able to speak, listen, read and write fluently, appropriately, effectively and critically – for a wide range of personal, functional and social purposes. Learners will be expected to respond to a wide range of written texts, including challenging and dynamic texts.

 

Method of Assessment

The qualification is made up of two equally weighted externally assessed units, and one internally assessed unit. The two externally assessed units test Reading and Writing skills, whilst the internally assessed unit tests Oracy skills.

Entry Requirements

GCSE English Language preparatory course (Agored Cymru qualification - 1 year course) - GCSE English Language grade E or above.

GCSE English Language (1 year course) - GCSE English Language grade D or above.

Learners who do not meet the entry requirements listed above may enrol upon successful completion of the course entry test.
