College Life in Carmarthenshire
It's not all about work, and with so many things to do and see, Carmarthenshire offers a mix of activities and places to visit with your fellow students.
Coleg Sir Gâr is situated in the beautiful county of Carmarthenshire with campuses situated in the three main towns of Llanelli, Carmarthen and Ammanford as well as Gelli Aur.
The county offers a unique balance of beautiful countryside and coastal areas, along with busy shopping centres and places to socialise with friends.
Outdoor activities such as cycling and surfing are very popular in the area. The town of Llanelli boasts a 20km stretch of coastline, which has been developed to include a 1000m seafront promenade, a Nicklaus golf course and the National Wetland Centre Wales.
There is an array of historical places to visit, such as castles and museums, and in Laugharne, in Carmarthen, you can visit the Boathouse where the Welsh writer Dylan Thomas famously wrote "Under Milk Wood".
Llanelli, Carmarthen and Ammanford all have excellent shopping facilities and also boast a wide range of restaurants, cafes/bars and pubs. All three towns have a cinema/theatre, art galleries, museums and excellent leisure facilities in the local leisure centres.
In addition to your programme of study, all students at Coleg Sir Gâr are encouraged to participate in recreational, educational and competitive activities. Coleg Sir Gâr has something to offer everyone whether you want to take your leisure time seriously and take part in organised activities or you just want to do something to relax.
Most activities take place on Wednesday afternoons, during the time allocated for complementary studies. Through participation students have the opportunity to demonstrate personal qualities and strengths valued by employers and higher education establishments alike.
The college offer a wide range of activities that include: music, rugby, football, netball, debating, swimming, tennis, dance, drama, Duke of Edinburgh, volunteering and much more.
Through the Sports Academy, support is available for students across the college, wishing to progress their sporting interests to compete at local and national levels.
There are plenty of rail and bus services operating throughout south west Wales, linking up to other cities, such as Swansea and the captal of Wales, Cardiff, as well as scenic routes such as the heart of Wales railway line which travels up to mid Wales. The M4 motorway, is less than half an hour's drive from most campuses.
