Welcome.

The academy's main aim is to ensure that young sports men and women receive all the support they require to become players and people of quality.

The Coleg Sir Gâr Sports Academy concept has developed to provide students with the opportunity of achieving their maximum potential in both sporting and academic spheres. The sports academy structure develops young players of netball, football and rugby. It also supports individual performers in sports such as athletics, golf, kickboxing, cross country etc.

The academy has excellent links with partners e.g. Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), Scarlets, Wales Football Trust (WFT), The Welsh Netball Association (WNA), Carmarthenshire County Council Sports Development Department, Colegau Cymru and AoC Sport.

There are designated timetabled academy coaching sessions throughout the week with fixtures on a Wednesday. Sports academy students are drawn from a range of courses across the five Coleg Sir Gâr campuses. We compete on a weekly basis in Welsh and British competitions.

Academy students have access to strength and conditioning and physiotherapy support.

  • Rugby Academy

Coleg Sir Gâr and Scarlets have always had a strong and fruitful association. The beginning of the relationship was a partnership agreement between both parties in a unique and exciting venture; the Llanelli Rugby Academy.

The Llanelli Rugby Academy at Coleg Sir Gâr was launched in the summer of 2000. The Llanelli Rugby Academy's main aim is to ensure that young players receive all the support they require to become players and people of quality. This is achieved by offering the best facilities, resources and support available to them.

The rugby academy recognises the importance of ensuring young rugby players have a secondary career, which they can take up, at the end of their professional playing careers. This is crucial to the aims of the academy as we provide everything a young player requires to reach his playing potential and will also provide courses, including coaching development, and services to ensure social, academic and/or vocational development.

The college has enjoyed a lot of success in recent years at both forms of the game. We have produced a glut of age grade internationals but also ever more increasing is the number of senior Welsh internationals.

  • Football Academy

The football academy is a professionally run centre of excellence for football in the Carmarthenshire area. The students of the academy will experience a planned training week of conditioning and skill development taken by FAW registered coaches.

Students benefit from the excellent on-site facilities the college has for football including a fitness suite, gymnasium and a floodlight 3G surface for all year round training. The academy competes in the Association of Colleges (AOC) leagues and cups as well as the Welsh Colleges Football Association and Welsh Schools Football Association cups.

We recognise the importance of ensuring young football players have a career path, which they follow alongside their football aspirations. This is crucial to the aims of the academy; we provide everything a young player requires to reach his playing potential while ensuring social, academic and/or vocational development.

All squad members will have the opportunity to take the FAW Football Leaders qualification.

As an academy member we invest our professional expertise, equipment, time and effort for you to achieve your true potential.

  • Netball

The Netball Academy provides young, talented netball players with a learning environment through a holistic approach, where they can develop the necessary skills needed to progress and improve as players, coaches and umpires, while also supporting their academic studies. Long term athlete development is key in ensuring that all players achieve their potential.

We work closely with the Welsh Netball Association providing quality, up to date technical training, alongside modern conditioning programs and fitness testing, advice on nutrition and lifestyle management. Close links with Welsh Netball’s Performance Training centres are established ensuring that players can progress within Welsh Netball’s Performance Pathway, as players, coaches and umpires.

Support is provided to future coaches from UKCC qualified trainers and assessors, while students choosing a pathway in officiating are supported and mentored by qualified umpires. Training sessions are planned and delivered by qualified UKCC level two coaches who are experienced in coaching at a high level within Welsh Netball. Training is incorporated into the academic timetable with fixtures being played on a Wednesday afternoon. Teams compete at a high standard on a weekly basis within the Welsh Colleges League, and participate in the British Colleges Cup and other tournaments throughout the year.

The academy promotes values and behaviours to ensure players become well rounded sportswomen, students and members of the community and society.
