About Carmarthen School of Art

Carmarthen School of Art has been providing Art education since 1854, being one of the first Art Schools set up in Britain following the Great Exhibition in Crystal Palace in London.

The School has been continually evolving ever since, responding to social, creative and cultural developments and the changing needs of its students, industry and wider community. Our heritage is important to us and influences our School ethos.

The Fashion: Design and Construction programme at Carmarthen School of Art, Coleg Sir Gar has evolved in response to contemporary fashion culture and recent developments within the fashion design industry. The programme aims to develop students’ abilities and confidence in designing and constructing garments through practice-led experience and processes that foster the development of individual design identity. Class sizes are small and tutor contact is second to none.

The programme ensure that students develop a portfolio of fashion design work relevant to the current industry.

The fashion industry is a fast-moving, competitive market place. This programme develops reflective graduates who are highly creative, independent, enquiring individuals, versatile and capable of meeting its challenges and working effectively and successfully within this professional context. Graduate success is high, with many students developing their own fashion labels, while others have found employment designing within larger design houses or within the wider fashion sector.

What our students say...

It is so great that the Fashion and Textiles courses have finally been recognised in this way! We are so lucky here at the Fashion Department at Carmarthen School of Art to have small class sizes that really allow us to bond as a group, and have feedback, direction and encouragement from tutors and technicians whenever we need and ask for it.  I am so glad that I chose to come here, and am looking forward to my next year here as part of the Graduate Resident scheme!

Textiles Degree Programme

The Textiles: Knit, Weave and Mixed Media programme at Carmarthen School of Art, Coleg Sir Gar is unique within Wales providing the opportunity to explore weaving, knitting and mixed media finishing processes. Drawing and digital design form the foundation for development.

The Textiles degree programme at Carmarthen School of Art offers a unique opportunity for students.  The small class sizes mean that we can work with student's strengths and interests to produce work that is aligned with their career goals within the textiles field.

I think this is evident through the diversity of outcomes exhibited at our degree shows  year on year.   Our focus on skills is key and from this springboard students develop their own design practice'
