Programme Description


This course is designed to allow participants to gain an appreciation of the principles and practices of administering canine first aid in a range of emergency situations, together with an understanding of the relevant legal duties and responsibilities.

The course includes practical sessions to allow participants to practice a range of skills including bandaging and CPR. 

The course is of benefit to anyone who owns or works with dogs. The knowledge and skills developed as part of this course will also reassure customers of businesses such as dog groomers, boarding kennels, dog sitters and walkers that their pets are safeguarded. As such, this module can form part of recognised continued professional development for any employee of such a business.

Programme Features


The course is delivered by a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) and includes both classroom theory and practical sessions.

Programme Content


  • Role of the dog owner in providing first aid in accordance with the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966
  • How to recognise conditions requiring emergency first aid to include heat stroke, wounds, fractures, seizures, and shock
  • Types of haemorrhage (bleeding) and methods of control
  • Resuscitation procedures to include CPR and the Heimlich manoeuvre
  • First aid for burns, scalds, electrocution, poisoning, bites and stings
  • How to safely handle and transport a critically ill or injured dog
  • Pet First Aid Kits 

Progression & Employment


The course is of benefit to anyone who owns or works with dogs.
