Programme Description

This level two qualification is designed for those who have an ambition for a career in the hairdressing industry. 

You will learn about basic hair treatments and we will provide you with a good foundation from which you could progress to higher level courses.  

Learning in the college’s commercial training salon, you will develop the essential skills needed for your career path as a hairdresser. 

During the course you will be assisted to develop practical expertise and essential knowledge to progress within the industry.

This course provides you with the practical opportunities allowing you to complete your assignments and put your skills into practice in a real hairdressing salon environment.

Programme Features

The college runs a commercial training salon which is  open to the public. This experience provides you with a real working environment and allows you to gain a sense of how it will feel to work in the industry. 

There is also an emphasis on supporting you in becoming an independent learner through individual planning, target setting and development. 

You will be involved in a thriving programme of activities which include trips and events as well as taking part in national skills competitions which can progress to international competitions. 

This is a full-time course which will include working one night a week in the college salon.

Programme Content

This course consists of mandatory units delivered over one year: 

  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Cut hair using basic techniques
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Colour and lighten hair
  • Style and finish hair
  • Set and dress hair
  • Develop and maintain effectiveness at work
  • Fulfil salon reception duties
  • Plait and twist hair

Alongside your main qualification, you will be given the opportunity to improve your grades by either taking GCSE resits or Essential skills in both literacy and numeracy which will enable you to progress to further courses, develop your confidence and career options.

Progression & Employment

This course focuses on providing you with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to higher level courses, apprenticeships and ultimately employment as a junior hairdresser. 

Undertaking the right training at the start of your career is a great long-term investment in your career prospects.

Following the course, you could progress and apply for the level three diploma course or gain employment in commercial salons, television, film, theatre and media work, cruise liners, wigmakers, barbers or self-employment. An entrepreneurial team at the college can offer guidance on self employment.

Method of Assessment

As part of this programme the following methods of assessment will be used:

  • Practical examination
  • Continuous assessments
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Written assessments

Entry Requirements

Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview however, a positive attitude to learning a vocational skill is required. 

You will need a minimum of four GCSEs grades at A* to D with two C grades, one being either English/Welsh (first language) or maths. Or we will accept successful completion of a level one vocational qualification in a relevant subject. 

English and maths are an integral part of the course.  Students who do not yet have the necessary grades at C or above will receive additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills depending on prior GCSE grades.

Additional Costs

You will have access to a range of equipment and resources as part of this course but in addition, consumable products and a uniform will need to be purchased. This information will be given prior to your start date and can be advised at interview.

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits relating to your course.
