Programme Description

Dwyieithrwydd – y ffordd ymlaen / Bilingualism – the way ahead. Do you want to be able to communicate in more than language? Do you want to have enhanced employment opportunities? Do you like a challenge? Studying Welsh will give you the chance to encounter Welsh films and literature; to undertake personal research into a topic of your own choice; to learn how to communicate using various formats and tones in a second language. You will develop a wide range of skills including communication, problem solving, flexibility, teamwork and creativity – all of which will make you highly employable and a desirable student for any higher education course.

Programme Features

  • There is a great emphasis on oral work, with students regularly working in groups and pairs to discuss contemporary issues
  • Use of language and grammar are key aspects of the course, helping students develop their fluency and accuracy in the Welsh language
  • Various forms of literature are studied including poetry, short stories and a play and they form a basis for both oral discussion and written assignments.

Progression and Employment

Successful students have gone on to study various degrees in Welsh at university, which has led to them becoming Welsh language teachers, translators, publishers or tutors. Others have progressed to study subjects where their Welsh skills will be of use in the future e.g. Media, Journalism, Local Governance & Council, Education and Nursing.

In 2018 a student received personal correspondence from a university admissions tutor, complimenting him on the quality and standard of his personal statement, written in support of his application to study Welsh. This student has taken up a place at Cardiff University and has shown such aptitude for the subject that he has been able to join the first language stream from the outset.

In 2018, the pass rate at A2 was 100% A* - C, with 67% of students achieving grades A*-B.
