With a regular update of breaking business news stories, research tasks, and student presentations, the world of business is brought to life in the classroom. In addition, visits to local businesses and guest speakers with specialisms in key business functions ensure that the relevance of the theory is reinforced. Business is a subject which combines effectively with many subject areas including, Languages, Mathematics, Sciences and Humanities.

The course encourages the practical application of business concepts by providing students with the opportunity to explore events in the business world as a means of reinforcing understanding of theories and concepts. It is intended to promote active, rather than passive understanding, as it considers business theories and concepts within a framework that provides reasons for studying the subject
This course focuses on the contemporary business world as it has been devised to reflect contemporary issues in the business world, eg. entrepreneurship, customer service and emerging markets
Business students at Coleg Sir Gar have gone on to study a range of Business related courses including Business Management, Business & Fashion, Business & Marketing, Business & French, and a range of Accountancy courses in many Universities, including Cardiff, Sussex, Aberystwyth, Nottingham, Birmingham Bath and Reading.
Two students who studied A level Business at Coleg Sir Gar who achieved A grades are now studying Business and Management courses in Cardiff and Leeds Universities: members of the prestigious Russell Group Universities.
The A-Level qualification has a wide range of topics and areas of interest within the business world:
Topics covered include: Financial Strategies and Accounts - making investment information, measuring performance and financial decisions. Marketing Strategies - analysing markets, and selecting successful marketing strategies, developing marketing plans. Operations Strategies - operational issues, location, innovation and improving operational efficiency. Human Resource Strategies - workforce planning, adapting organisational structures, successful employee relations.
The Business Environment and Managing Change Corporate Aims and Objectives - purpose and nature of corporate strategies, stakeholder perspectives. It also looks at Assessing Change in the Business Environment - the effects of changes in the economic, political, social, ethical and technological environment and responses of organisations.
Two external examinations are sat at the end of year one and at the end of two.
Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A* - C.
Entry Requirements: Cs in English Language or Welsh first Language, Mathematics and Sciences - there is bilingual support available to students from Welsh and bilingual schools.
Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Curriculum Area.
