This course is a fantastic opportunity for learners to build upon their previous knowledge of, and skills in, French. Through a variety of social and cultural themes, learners will be able to develop their linguistic knowledge and cultural understanding of the French-speaking world.
With guaranteed small classes there is a strong emphasis placed on building learners’ confidence in fluency in spoken French. The opportunity to study literature and film allows learners to undertake a deeper analysis of language structures and increase their cultural awareness. Studying a language at A Level not only enhances their ability in French but greatly improves a wide variety of skills such as; communication, organisation, problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, commitment, independent research skills, and working with others.
French@CSG has had excellent results over the years. Part of this success is down to the guaranteed small groups which allow individual attention to skills, development and acquisition of language through exposure to a wide range of contemporary, cultural and social topics, all whilst there is an almost exclusive use of French in classroom activities.
An A Level in French opens many doors, a modern foreign language complements any subject and the skills acquired at A Level enhance learners’ application to study any discipline at HE level. At least 50% of our students continue to study a language either as single honours degree programme or as a joint honours degree programme. In 2018 an A grade student went on to study Politics and French at Cardiff University after gaining an A in French at Coleg Sir Gar and is hoping to work in the United Nations as an international lobbyist. In 2017, an A grade tri-lingual student went on to study French and Spanish at Bristol University and has been approached by companies as diverse as KPMG (business) and UNESCO (international charity) to apply to their international graduate programmes.
The following topics will be studied with reference to target language countries as well as in a wider, global context as appropriate.
Leisure and Lifestyles, including travel and tourism, sport, hobbies, entertainment, customs, traditions, healthy living – health and nutrition, diet and exercise; unhealthy living - drugs, aids, smoking, alcohol, etc. The Individual and Society, including relationships and responsibilities, gender issues, youth culture (values, peer groups, fashions and trends etc.), education, vocational training and future careers.
Environmental Issues, including technology, pollution, global warming, transport, energy, nuclear energy, renewable energies, conservation, recycling, sustainability Social and Political Issues, including the role of the media, racism, immigration, social exclusion and integration, terrorism, world of work (employment, commerce, globalization, etc.)
Candidates must meet the following assessment objectives in the context of the content of the specification:
AS Unit 1 exam -12% and Unit 2 exam -28%
A2 Unit 3 exam -18%; Unit 4 exam -30%; Unit 5 exam – 12%
Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A* - C.
Specifically: B+ grade at GCSE or come from a bilingual French speaking background (to be assessed by the department).
Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Faculty.
