Programme Description

The current A-level course delivered at the college enables students to study recent twentieth century European History, alongside the more traditional British Tudor History and this contrasts with the American International History dimension.

These topics allow students to develop into well rounded historians and develop the skills and attributes most universities look favourably upon. The department provides opportunities to participate in the "Lessons from Auschwitz" project with the Holocaust Educational Trust and hosts a programme of visiting lecturers from experts in the field.  Students have also been supported in doing and Extended Project in History to assist with application to Oxbridge and Russel Group universities to do single or joint History Degrees.  We have had great success in preparing students for Oxbridge, Fullbright and Russell Group University applications and interviews.

Programme Features

The department consistently receives outstanding exam results  There are opportunities for lively class discussions and organised visits to universities, museums, visits, course-related performances and talks related to the A Level course.

History coursework provides the opportunity for real historical research which is vital for taking on to Higher Education.  History develops skills that are highly valued in many professions, particularly law, researcher posts in various media outlets; journalism, teaching/lecturing; archivists, etc..  A very high percentage of students go on to study in University and many do single or joint History Degrees with partner subjects such as Law, Politics and Modern Foreign Languages.

Progression and Employment

A Levels provide an excellent basis for progression to higher level qualifications such as Degrees or Higher National Diplomas.  The history specialist may become an academic, lawyer, teacher, librarian, archivist or museum officer.  The study of history is also valuable in gaining entry to journalism, broadcasting, politics, the civil service, and a wide variety of management posts in business and commerce.

Several of our students have gone on to study History at prestigious universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol and King’s London, and other Russell and Sorrel Group Universities.

Recent students are currently studying history at Oxford and geography at Cambridge Universities after completing their A-level in History with us in Coleg Sir Gar
