AS/A Level Photography

Programme Description



This is a two year programme which focuses on developing a broad understanding of photography. The programme aims for every learner to develop their own unique voices using visual imagery, applying technical and contextual understanding confidently to realise their intentions. Learners are encouraged to explore individual interests and ideas over a range of genres through the development of sketchbooks to record their progress. 

If you have an interest in capturing a moment, exploring your environment or just taking exciting Artistic photographs this course will investigate these themes. The course will look at why Photography is important as a visual medium, its Historic and Artistic context as well as how you can develop it as a visual tool to create Art.  We study Composition… Lighting….Camera Techniques… Adobe Photoshop…. Artistic manipulation…. Independent Learning. Progression to Foundation and Degree courses is common both in Photography, Design and Fine Art.


Programme Features



  • Analogue and digital methods of image-making are taught as well as experimental processes e.g. Pinhole
  • Industry standard software, predominantly Photoshop and Bridge, is taught throughout the course
  • Cameras, lighting and other equipment is available for students to borrow
  • Historical and contextual studies are integrated within each student’s personal projects
  • Learners have the opportunity to participate in local and National competitions
  • Regular visits to exhibitions, galleries and workshops are arranged for all learners
  • All second year learners and selected first year learners exhibit their work at an end of year exhibition.

Programme Entry Requirements



Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 6/7 GCSEs at grades A* - C.

An interest in Photography – Examples of your work (portfolio) will be helpful as will. a GCSE in Art. All students should have a C or above grade in English language

Photography should have a grade C or above in a related subject, for example Art and Design, and/or a portfolio of work. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Curriculum Area.


Additional Costs



All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £45.00 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
