Coleg Sir Gâr was created in 1985 and became a corporate institution in 1993. In 2013 it became Coleg Sir Gar Ltd, a company within the University of Wales: Trinity Saint David Group, and part of a regional Dual Sector University. The College has an annual turnover of over £35m and employs around 800 staff.
The College is based in South West Wales and has five main campuses at Llanelli (Graig), Carmarthen (Pibwrlwyd and Jobs Well), Ammanford and Llandeilo (Gelli Aur). The College is also home to Carmarthen School of Art which has its origins dating back to 1854.
The College has approximately 9,000 learners of which some 3,000 are full time and 6,000 are part time. There are approximately 900 higher education learners. It also offers its provision on-line, via partnerships at community locations and in the workplace.
The College has a comprehensive and broad range of academic and vocational learning programmes. These range from pre-entry to graduate level, providing a service to the whole learning community. It offers further education, adult and community learning, higher education, work based learning and bespoke programmes and services for business development. It also provides for large numbers of 14-16 school pupils who attend the College or are taught by College staff at their schools.
The breadth of facilities demonstrates the college's financial investment and importance of providing its students with the best learning environment to equip them in readiness for employment or university.
Facilities include: An indoor equine arena; A training restaurant (Merlin's Restaurant); Hair and beauty salons; A new construction centre and automotive engineering centre; Dance studio, CAD/CAM suites, an engineering centre, Cast iron foundry; Textile technologies; All-weather sports pitch; Fitness and sports science testing facilities; Roland Academy; Media studio; Mac suites; Language labs; Agricultural campus with working farm and learning resource centres with access to the internet and the most up-to-date Microsoft software.
The facilities are spread across our five campuses where different subject areas are taught. For example, Ammanford is the hub for all construction courses and houses various bays for electrical, gas and solar courses whereas at Pibwrlwyd campus, you'll find catering students spending an evening a week at the training restaurant serving the public or spending their time offering treatments to clients in the hair and beauty salon. Each campus has its own individual learning environment and it is recommended that prospective students view the facilities at an open evening where they can also talk to teaching and support staff.
Students at Coleg Sir Gâr are once again celebrating, achieving an excellent set of A-level results.
Overall, for A level the College celebrates 81% of learners achieving grades A*-C and 100% achieving A* – E. This improves on the performance of the previous year and we would like to congratulate everyone on their success.
