The Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing will develop learners’ knowledge and skills in gym instruction to enable them to pursue a career as a gym instructor. This qualification will provide a combination of knowledge and skills to prescribe, plan and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes to a range of clients.
This is an industry recognised qualification. Successful achievement of this qualification will provide entry to the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) as an affiliate member (exercise and fitness).

The qualification provides learners with a good insight into the skills and knowledge they require, not only for working in this sector, but generic, transferable skills that all employers would welcome. The choice of units offered across Level 2 gives learners the opportunity to demonstrate a variety of transferable skills that employers are seeking.
During the qualification learners will cover the following:
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology that is applicable to gym instructing.
Principles of exercise, fitness and health.
Health and safety in a fitness environment.
Effective communication skills for client consultations to support positive behaviour change.
The skills needed to plan and conduct gym based exercise sessions with individuals and groups.
Legal and professional requirements for fitness instructing.
How to manage, evaluate and improve their own performance.

Portfolio of Evidence.
Learners have to be at least 16 years old.
Some experience of gym-based exercises, including free weights, is highly recommended.
The course requires physical exertion, and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary.
There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 2.
