This is a level three programme that gives you the opportunity to pursue art and design in exploratory, investigative and experimental ways.
The course is designed for those who may not have previous formal qualifications, but during a portfolio interview demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment to art and design, and having the potential to complete the course and apply, with support, for creative degree courses.
Traditionally the programme entertains a diverse range of age groups and you are encouraged to develop your creative and technical skills through lectures, workshops and projects.
The programme content includes drawing, painting, 2D / 3D design studies and history of art, including units that provide a general awareness, knowledge and understanding of art, design and its contexts.
Art units involve working directly from observation to develop analytical, recording and compositional skills which you apply to personal and creative work within a range of disciplines.
The Access to Higher Education: Art & Design course covers a series of units totalling 60 credits which cover core and academic units which are mandatory.
This course also includes core study skills including communication, thinking skills and portfolio preparation.
You are asked to submit work for assessment at the end of each unit of study. Each specialist unit is graded. The work is subject to internal and external verification.
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
All applicants will need to bring a portfolio of art, craft, and design work to their interview.
Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview. Although not an entry requirement, it is beneficial to have GCSEs in mathematics and English.
