Access to HE - Humanities and Social Sciences

Studying the Access to Humanities and Social sciences course will give you an insight into a varied range of appropriate subjects which will embed the transferrable skills required to succeed at higher education. To succeed on this Access course, you need to be motivated, enthusiastic, able to manage time effectively and be ready to study.

This course has a varied menu of Level 3 (A Level standard) subjects such as English, History, Law, Psychology, Sociology, Extended Project. These are taught together with core units of Mathematics and Communication & Study Skills to help you prepare for your management of the Diploma, application to UCAS/higher education whilst developing the necessary skills to succeed in Access.

Students who successfully complete the course would be eligible to apply for HND or Degree courses in a related subject area.

There are a number of progression routes to HE from this course which include degrees in English Language and Literature; History; Philosophy, Journalism; Media; Social Studies; Psychology, Sociology; Geography; Environmental Studies; Law, Philosophy, Theology, Primary Education, Social Work; Counselling Studies, and Criminology and many more.

Successful Access students from Access@CSG have gone on to study various courses at universities across the UK and have entered graduate programmes after their HE studies in Social Work, local government and Administrative posts in NHS.

A recent student was successful in securing a place at King’s College University within Media and Journalism after progressing onto the Access course from the Pre-Access/SFFS provision with CSG.

Although achieving the Diploma itself is not dependent on passing an examination, each module will be assessed through a combination of methods:

• Controlled Assessments (open and closed book)
• Preparing Case studies
• Essays
• Group and individual presentations
• Group debate
• Evaluative reports
• Academic posters

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.

Students will be required to have a C grade at GCSE English and Maths. All applicants must be 18 before the September start for this course.

Applicants without the relevant qualifications, or equivalents, will have to take the SFFS (pre-Access) course first and the relevant GCSEs, as required, to ensure they are able to progress on to the suitable pathway. The SFFS is offered part time in the evenings, or full time over three days on Graig campus
