Studying the Skills for Further Study course will give you an insight into a varied range of appropriate subjects which will embed the transferrable skills required to succeed at higher education.

To succeed on this course, you need to be motivated, enthusiastic, able to manage time effectively and be ready to study. The team of staff that run this course are highly supportive and understanding and are there to help you transition back into education and teach you all the necessary skills to prepare you for next steps within your educational journey.

Programme Features

The Skills for Further Study course is designed to prepare students for progression onto level 3 courses such as the Level 3 Access to HE diplomas at Coleg Sir Gar.

This course is tailored to support and encourage students who may be returning to education after a period of time or students with skills gaps within numeracy and literacy.

Programme content

This course has a varied menu of level 2 subjects such as essay writing, presentation skills, sciences, numeracy and study management skills. These are taught through a variety of assessment methods to appeal to all learning styles whilst developing the necessary skills to succeed for this and future courses. 

Progression and employment

Learners will be accepted to progress onto level 3 courses such as the Access diploma providing they meet the required standards of a progression panel. Any further requirements will be stated within the entry requirements of the particular course. Students who successfully complete the course would be eligible to apply for a range of level 3 courses (depending on specific entry requirements for those courses). Learners will be considered to progress onto level 3 courses such as the Access diploma providing they meet the required standards of a progression panel.

Successful students have gone on to study various courses at universities across the UK and have entered graduate programmes after their higher education studies in social work, local government and administrative posts in the NHS. 

Recent students on this course  were successful in securing places at King’s College University studying Media and Journalism; Liverpool to complete a degree in Creative Writing and to study Law at Swansea and Cardiff Universities.  Many achieved their ambitions progressing onto the Access course from the GCSE/Pre-Access/SFFS provision at the college.

Method of assessment

Although achieving the diploma itself is not dependent on passing an examination, each module will be assessed through a combination of methods: 

  • Essays 
  • Group and individual presentations 
  • Group debate
  • Evaluative reports
  • Academic posters
  • Time controlled assessments
Additional costs

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment. 

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications are required though entry will be subject to an interview. Applicants will be considered for the course after a successful interview where they show evidence that they are capable of working at level 2.
