Plumbing and Heating Foundation Apprenticeship

Programme Description

This pathway provides a nationally agreed Plumbing foundation apprenticeship framework for a work based learning route into employment within the construction industry, using qualifications that combine both practical skills and knowledge.

Learners completing a Plumbing foundation apprenticeship will undertake work in areas such as:

Installation of cold, hot and central heating systems, decommissioning a variety of plumbing related system and maintenance techniques

Programme Features

As an apprentice you will be allocated a training advisor who will oversee and support you through your journey on this framework, working closely both with your employer and tutors at college.

You will be expected to attend college one day/week for underpinning knowledge, and assessment will also take place in college or workplace on a regular basis. This course is both theory and practical based.

The Level 2 NVQ/Diploma in Plumbing and Heating includes:

  • Health and Safety in the construction industry
  • Communicating with others within building services engineering
  • Applying environmental protection measures within building services engineering
  • Applying scientific principles within mechanical services engineering
  • Carryout site preparation, and pipework fabrication techniques for domestic plumbing and heating systems
  • Applying domestic cold water system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Applying domestic hot water system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Applying domestic central heating system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Applying domestic rainwater system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Applying domestic above ground drainage system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Apply safe working practices in building services engineering working environment
  • Install and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems

Programme Content

This pathway will develop your skills for employment as a Plumber at foundation level.

Upon successful completion of this programme, Apprentices will achieve the following -

Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating

Essential Skills Qualification in Communication, Application of Number at level 2 and digital literacy at level 1

Progression & Employment

Progression onto apprenticeship programmes that will provide further development and understanding of trades within the construction industry.

Method of Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used which include written knowledge questions, online and practical skills tests.

Units are assessed by an NVQ portfolio and/or practically in the work place through the observation of working practices. Written and on line tests for the theory knowledge of NVQ/diploma qualifications will be undertaken within the college.

Entry Requirements

Although there are no formal entry requirements, students will need to have a good level of numeracy and literacy skills.  Applicants should have an interest in the chosen craft and evidence of practical ability would be an advantage. In addition apprentices;

  • Must be employed status
  • Must be over 16 years of age
  • Attend a formal interview. You may be required to undertake a practical skills test as part of the interview process.
  • Undertake a diagnostic test on literacy and numeracy skills.

Additional Costs

Students will be required to source and purchase their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which comprises of safety boots, safety glasses, hard hat and Hi- Vis.
