Programme Description

This pathway provides a nationally agreed Plumbing apprenticeship framework for a work based learning route into employment within the construction industry, using qualifications that combine both practical skills and knowledge.

Learners completing a Plumbing apprenticeship will undertake work in areas such as:

Designing, installing and commissioning cold, hot and central heating systems in addition to carrying out a variety of complex maintenance tasks.

Programme Features

As an apprentice you will be allocated a training advisor who will oversee and support you through your journey on this framework, working closely both with your employer and tutors at college.

You will be expected to attend college one day/week for underpinning knowledge, and assessment will also take place in college or workplace on a regular basis. This course is both theory and practical based.

 

The Level 3 NVQ/Diploma in Plumbing and Heating includes:

  • Understand how to organise resources within building services engineering
  • Apply domestic cold water system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques.
  • Apply domestic hot water system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques.
  • Apply domestic central heating system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques.
  • Carryout electrical work on domestic plumbing and heating systems and components.
  • Apply domestic sanitation system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques.
  • Install, commission, service and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems.
  • Understand the fundamental principles and requirements of environmental technology systems.
  • The requirements to install, commission and handover solar thermal hot water systems.
  • Install, commission and handover ‘active’ solar thermal hot water systems.
  • The requirements to inspect service and maintain ‘active’ solar thermal hot water systems.
  • Inspect service and maintain ‘active’ solar thermal hot water systems.

Programme Content

This pathway will develop your skills for employment as a qualified L3 Plumber.

Upon successful completion of this programme, Apprentices will achieve the following -

Level 3 NVQ/Diploma in Plumbing and heating

Essential Skills Qualification in Communication and Application of Number at level 2

Employer Rights and Responsibilities

Progression & Employment

Progression from this framework would be onto a level 4 higher apprenticeship in a construction related discipline or HNC in Construction Management and Technology.

Method of Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used which include written knowledge questions, online and practical skills tests.

Units are assessed by an NVQ portfolio and practically in the work place through the observation of working practices. Written and on line tests for the theory knowledge of NVQ/diploma qualifications will be undertaken within the college.

Entry Requirements

Although there are no formal entry requirements, students will need to have a good level of numeracy and literacy skills.  Applicants should have an interest in the chosen craft and evidence of practical ability would be an advantage. In addition apprentices;

  • Must be employed status
  • Must be over 16 years of age
  • Attend a formal interview. You may be required to undertake a practical skills test as part of the interview process.
  • Undertake a diagnostic test on literacy and numeracy skills.

Additional Costs

Students will be required to source and purchase their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which comprises of safety boots, safety glasses, hard hat and Hi- Vis.
