Programme Description

This Level 2 diploma provides learners with opportunity to develop skills associated with hanging wallpaper, preparing surfaces for decoration and applying paint systems to complex areas. It allows students to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in painting and decorating. You will complete a variety of painting and decorating related tasks that are undertaken in industry and safely use various hand and power tools. Principals of building construction, information and communication unit will also provide you with an introduction to construction technology.

Programme Features

This course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge of students enabling them to work in the industry in their chosen craft.

It has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions and the tests are based on the learner showing what they can do as an individual.

The course is delivered by highly qualified and experienced staff using modern facilities.

As part of the programme learners will also complete Essential Skills.

Opportunities will also be provided for GCSEs in Welsh, English and Mathematics and for welsh language development.

Programme Content

Each unit comprises of two parts that cover subject knowledge and practical skills:

  • Health and Safety and welfare in construction

  • Principles of building construction, information and communication

  • Preparing surfaces for decorating

  • Applying paint systems by brush and roller to complex areas

  • Applying standard papers to walls and ceilings

  • Reducing specialist finishes for decorative work

  • Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms

  • Creating and applying colour

This course also includes Essential or Basic Skills Qualifications delivery.

Progression & Employment

Students will be able to progress onto an apprenticeship programme subject interview and employment of which will provide further development and understanding of the construction industry.

Method of Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used which include written knowledge questions, online and practical skills tests.

Entry Requirements

Formal interview and ideally students will have completed a L1 diploma in Painting and Decorating and have good levels of literacy and numeracy.  Consideration will also be given to mature students subject to formal interview. Applicants should have an interest in the chosen craft and evidence of practical ability would be an advantage.

Additional Costs

Students will be required to source and purchase their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which comprises safety boots, safety glasses, hard hat and Hi- Vis.

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
