Foundation Apprenticeship in Trees and Timber Level 2

Programme Description

A Foundation Apprenticeship is a work based learning programme where the learner is "earning while learning".  It focuses on developing the skills required to enable the learner to gain full time employment in the Trees and Timber Industry.  The programme is aimed at learners over the age of 16.  The Apprentice will be employed and receive at least the minimum Apprentice wage.  The Apprentice will attend college on a day release basis and should achieve the Level 2 Apprenticeship Framework within the agreed timescale. 

Programme Features

  • All learners will be supported by a Training Adviser/Assessor who will monitor progress towards achieving targets on a regular basis (every 56 to 61 days)
  • The Training Adviser/Assessor will liaise closely with the employer to ensure that qualifications are achieved within the timescale
  • The Training Adviser/Assessor will assess the Apprentice in the workplace as and when required (every 56 - 61 days)
  • There will be opportunities to achieve additional certificate of competency in Chainsaw Maintenance and Operation

Progression & Employment

Learners who have successfully completed this Foundation Apprenticeship can progress onto a Level 3 Apprenticeship.

Programme Content

Learners following the Apprenticeship will have to achieve a framework of qualifications which will include: -

  • Level 2 City & Guilds Diploma in Work Based Trees & Timber
  • Level 2 City & Guilds Certificate in Forestry and Arboriculture

Essential Skills must be achieved in order for a successful completion these are: -

  • Essential Skills Wales Application of Number Level 2
  • Essential Skills Wales Communication Level 2
  • (In some circumstances previously achieved proxy qualifications may be used)

Programme Assessment

The learner will be continually assessed both in the work place and at college which will include coursework, assignments, practical work, work based evidence and observations.

Programme Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for the Trees & Timber Foundation Apprenticeship, however, there are qualifications and/or experience that will help learners prior to starting: -

  • Level 1 Certificate in Land-based Operations
  • Level 1 Certificate/Diploma in Land-based Studies
  • Level 1 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Work-based Land-based Operations
  • Have previously worked in, or are currently working within the industry.
  • Voluntary experience within the Trees & Timber Industry
  • GCSE/A Levels
