Apprentice Rhiannon achieves first-class engineering degree.

Rhiannon Gallacher obtained a first-class honours degree through an apprenticeship scheme supported by Tata Steel who recently promoted her to a technical maintenance engineer.

The former Amman Valley pupil passed her GCSEs and progressed to Coleg Sir Gâr’s enhanced engineering scheme studying electrical engineering subject for 30 hours a week.

Competency in the workshops and hard work in the classroom were soon evident and rewarded her with distinction grades. As part of the course, Rhiannon undertook five weeks work experience at a number of manufacturing companies and having impressed employers with her enthusiasm and interest in engineering, she was taken on as an electrical apprentice at Tata.

The three year programme included sponsorship from her employer to complete a HNC in electrical and electronic engineering and following the apprenticeship, Rhiannon was employed by Tata as a process control and automation technician whilst being sponsored to complete her BSc honours degree in electrical electronic engineering.
