Qualifying for a football career.

Simon Thomas is a mature student who has worked for Football Association Wales, the FA, Arsenal and Cardiff City, working in the USA, France, England and Wales.

He returned to education to study a BSc honours degree in sports coaching and performance at Coleg Sir Gâr with aspirations of either working with a Spanish club, starting his own soccer school in Spain or progressing to a master’s degree.

Simon attends college around three days a week and says that it is a nurturing environment for those thinking of returning to education. “There is so much support, you can’t fault the staff at all, it’s virtually one to one and nothing is any trouble whether you need more time or don’t understand a topic, the staff are there for all students,” he says.

Studying around work is easy for Simon as he is a football coach and his partner is a huge support running the home and family.

Simon Thomas, who has 21 years of coaching experience added: “I wish I’d have done this 20 years ago really, I’ll be 48 when I graduate but hopefully I’ll have completed my FAW/UEFA A Licence around the same time.

“I really enjoy the academic side of the course as I’ve been out of the academic system since 1991.

“Every day is a learning day, not just in college but life, I’ve always tried to learn something new everyday even if it’s tricks with a football off the children I coach or in college where everything is a learning curve.”
