Equine Higher Apprenticeship - Yard Management Level 4

Programme Description

An apprenticeship is a work based learning programme where the learner is earning while learning. This programme is ideally suited to employees who have some element of responsibility within their job role. The programme is aimed at learners over the age of 16. The apprentice will be employed for a minimum of 16 hours a week and receive at least the minimum apprenticeship wage.

The learning pathway for this programme is yard management. At present, this pathway incorporates the British Horse Society qualification route and is exam based.

The apprentice will attend college one day a week. In college, learners cover underpinning theoretical knowledge in horse care and specialist practical skills to equip learners for the workplace. Learners should achieve the level four Higher Apprenticeship Framework within 18 to 24 months.

Programme Features

All learners will be supported by a training adviser/assessor who will monitor progress towards achieving targets on a regular basis (every 56 to 61 days).

They will liaise closely with the employer to ensure that qualifications are achieved within the timescale.

The apprentice is assessed in the workplace as and when required (every 56 to 61 days).

British Horse Society exams are recognised internationally as an industry standard qualification.

Learners will study at Coleg Sir Gar, a British Horse Society approved examination centre. Facilities include an indoor school, outdoor menage and stables accommodation approximately 14 horses.

Programme Content

Learners following this foundation apprenticeship will have to achieve a framework of qualifications which will include:

BHSQ Level 4 Certificate Horse Care Management
BHSQ Level 4 Certificate in the Principles of Horse Care and Management
Essential Skills must be achieved in order for a successful completion these are: -
Essential Skills Wales Application of Number (Level 2)
Essential Skills Wales Communication (Level 2)
Essential Skills Digital Literacy (Level 2)
In some circumstances previously achieved proxy qualifications may be used eg GCSE maths and English at grade C or above).

Fitting and Evaluating specialist tack
Horse Physiology
Managing an equestrian business
Equine Nutrition
Assessing horse Health and conformation

Progression & Employment

Learners who have successfully completed the level four higher apprenticeship have the opportunity to progress within the industry or into higher education courses such as foundation degrees or degrees in equine management, equine science, equine studies, equine training and behaviour.

Method of Assessment

BHSQ stage four horse care and management examination which can be undertaken at Coleg Sir Gar, Pibwrlwyd campus. Learners on this course will be continually assessed both in the workplace and in college which will include coursework, assignments, practical work, work based evidence and observations.

These programmes are part financed by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government.
British Horse Society Gold Membership is required.

Additional Costs

There is no additional fee whilst studying on the course other than the learner will be required to purchase a British Horse Society Gold Membership if undertaking BHS examinations. You will need to provide your own stationery and personal equipment. You may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
