The Fashion: Design and Construction programme at Carmarthen School of Art, Coleg Sir Gar has evolved in response to contemporary fashion culture and recent developments within the fashion design industry. The programme aims to develop students’ abilities and confidence in designing and constructing garments through practice-led experience and processes that foster the development of individual design identity. Class sizes are small and tutor contact is second to none.
The programme ensure that students develop a portfolio of fashion design work relevant to the current industry.
The fashion industry is a fast-moving, competitive market place. This programme develops reflective graduates who are highly creative, independent, enquiring individuals, versatile and capable of meeting its challenges and working effectively and successfully within this professional context. Graduate success is high, with many students developing their own fashion labels, while others have found employment designing within larger design houses or within the wider fashion sector.
You can expect a varied programme of assignments that highlight the importance of technical skills within the industry. These are underpinned with strong industrial links which provide you with highly relevant vocational practice, involving brands such as; House of Fraser, River Island, Howies and George.
The course is a member college of the prestigious British Fashion Council which gives colleges and students access to esteemed industry projects and internships.
The final year will provide you with the opportunity to exhibit your work at Graduate Fashion Week, London alongside national and international fashion graduates.
Fashion design, fashion illustration, fashion buying, trend prediction, styling, visual merchandising, film/television costume design, pattern cutting, garment technology, sampling assistant, teacher/lecturer and post graduate study (MA, PhD.)
Year 1 – A skills based year delivered through a series of workshops. The year comprises of eight modules including Design Production Processes, Design & Garment Construction, Developing Visual Language, Digital Processes and Creative Digital Practice (used within fashion), Study Skills & Developing a Critical and Contextual Language, Critical & Contextual Studies: Theories of Aesthetics and Creative Project.
Year 2 – A developmental year devised to allow you to apply the skills gained in year one to identify personal strengths and areas of interest within a range of industry relevant contexts. The year comprises of five modules: Live Projects, Design Competitions, Professional Skills, Visual & Material Culture and Specialist Project.
Year 3 – A personal negotiated brief which allows you to consolidate your practice and build a portfolio in preparation for future progression and personal ambitions. The year comprises of four modules all based upon individual projects: Visual Research Methodology, Theoretical Perspectives from Practice, Professional Skills: Enterprise & Employability and Major Project; culminating in an opportunity to showcase your work in a final degree show.
Assessment is on-going through workshop plenary sessions, critiques, formative and summative assessment with aural and written feedback.
Tariff score points accepted: A minimum of 96 points or equivalent portfolio ability for mature applicants.

Offers will be made based on the UCAS application, predicted grades (if applicable), UCAS reference and one to one interview. Programme Directors interview every applicant and discuss your portfolio of artwork and ambitions with you. This is a vital part of our selection process to ensure that the course is right for you and you are right for the course. Due to developing a relationship with you from the start our drop-out rates are minimal. As we continuously strive to turn students into successful professional practitioners.
Mature applicants with relevant prior experience are welcome and are considered on an individual basis. International students will be interviewed by video conferencing.
There is no additional Studio fee. However, it is likely that you will incur additional costs for specialist materials, printing and for course related excursions.
