Textiles is an exciting field of study that involves the creation, design, and production of various types of fabrics and materials. Whether you're interested in fashion design, textile engineering, or simply want to learn more about textiles as a hobby, there are several key aspects to explore.

This  is a level four stand alone qualification that is essentially the first year of our degree programmes. The course can be studied on a full time basis over one academic year, or part time over two years and will enable those students who are unable to commit to studying for a full BA Honours degree to have an understanding of, and learn the basic skills required in Textiles.

Unique within Wales, the opportunity to explore weaving, knitting and mixed media processes; drawing and digital design to form a foundation for development. Skills-based briefs allow students to produce work for a variety of market contexts e.g. fashion fabrics, designer-maker/craft, accessories, textiles for interiors and textile art.

Students learn transferable skills e.g. digital literacy, CAD software and communication skills.  We aim to nurture practical skills with academic rigour and professionalism.

Programme Features

This is a very well-resourced program with workshop facilities that include: traditional handlooms (available per student), computer-driven looms, rug-tufting, domestic and industrial knit machines, a dye lab, laser cutting, laser welding and ultrasonic joining; alongside standard printing, embellishing and stitching equipment. A wide range of commercial design software is used on both Mac and PC platforms. All students are treated as individuals and encouraged to create work that is reflective of their unique interests and aspirations.  Students have dedicated work spaces within a well-equipped, light and airy studio. Class sizes are small allowing for a high level of tutor interaction and easy access to resources.

Programme content

A skills based year delivered through a series of workshops,  including Constructed Textiles, Investigating Materiality, Developing Visual Language, Creative Digital Practice (used within textiles), Learning in a Digital Era and a Creative Project.

Progression and employment

Once students have successfully completed the Certificate of Higher Education, they could progress to level 5 of the full degree if they choose to do so.  Alternatively, they leave with specialist design and practical skills alongside transferable skills upon which to base the next phase of their career development.

Upon completing the full BA (Hons) Degree (level 5 and 6) a wide range of career and progression opportunities are available such as: textile designer/artist, art exhibition or installation work, design - freelance or in-house, designer/maker, community art worker, exhibition curator, teacher/lecturer, researcher, post-graduate study (MA, PhD) to name but a few.

Method of assessment

Assessment is on-going through workshop plenary sessions, tutorials and critiques, formative and summative assessment with aural and written feedback.

Entry requirements

Tariff score points accepted: A minimum of 96 points or equivalent portfolio ability for mature applicants.

All full time applicants need to apply online through UCAS.

Programme Directors interview every applicant to discuss their creative portfolio and ambitions. This is a vital part of our selection process ensuring all potential students are a good fit for the course and the course is a good fit for them.

Additional Costs

There is no additional Studio fee.  Essential materials  are provided for the completion of module briefs and the department boasts a well stocked yarn store.  However, it is likely that students will incur additional costs for specialist materials, printing and for course related excursions.
