This is an ideal full time course for those wishing to enter the agricultural industry but who might not have any experience or formal qualifications. 

This course is designed to develop your theory and practical skills in agriculture including an opportunity to complete 60 hours work experience which can improve employment prospects. 

The course also includes basic skills literacy and numeracy and the opportunity to resit GCSE Maths and English.

Programme content

Our level one agriculture course has a variety of units including:

  • Looking after animals such as dairy and beef cattle and sheep.  
  • Learning about farm machinery, including tractors and implements.
  • Learning about crops that are used in livestock farming.

The practical tasks will be carried out on the college farm during farm practical sessions, where you will be taught to carry out a variety of routine tasks such as feeding, bedding, cleaning out pens, lambing, calving and all routine health care.

Progression and employment

Following success at merit or distinction level you could progress to a full-time level two course or an apprenticeship.  Staff are happy to support and guide you in your aspirations.

Method of assessment

This will be based on practical, oral and written assessments which are ongoing throughout the course.

Some may be performance based and others will focus on the underpinning knowledge of the unit. 

There will also be two online exams.

This qualification is available to be assessed through the medium of Welsh and English.

Entry requirements

Three GCSE grades at A* to G or equivalent and a successful interview. It’s essential that you have an interest in farming, livestock and crops.

Additional costs

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

Learners are expected to provide their own steel toe capped wellington boots, safety boots, overalls and waterproofs for practical sessions.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
