Apprenticeship in Playwork (Level 3)

This qualification provides in-depth information about the role of a level three playworker when working with children and young people between the ages of four to 16. The diploma covers the knowledge and skills needed when working unsupervised.

Programme Features

This is an apprenticeship which is workshop and practice-based and is aimed at experienced playworkers who have a wide knowledge and understanding of children and young people and a deep appreciation of playwork principles and practice.

All learners will be supported by a training adviser/assessor who will monitor progress towards achieving targets on a regular basis.

The training adviser/assessor will liaise closely with the employer to ensure that qualifications are achieved within the timescale.

The training adviser/assessor will assess the apprentice in the workplace as and when required.

Programme content

Knowledge will be delivered through taught workshops and will include:

  • Theories of play, play types and environments
  • Principles of practice
  • Equal Opportunities
  • Safeguarding
  • Health and Safety
  • Relationships within the play environment.

Framework:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Playwork
  • Essential Skills Wales Application of Number (Level 2)
  • Essential Skills Wales Communication (Level 2)
  • In some circumstances previously achieved proxy qualifications may be used
Progression and employment

Learners who have successfully completed this apprenticeship could progress onto a degree in a related discipline.

Possible job roles could include playwork development officer, adventure centre supervisor, hospital playworker and manager of any playwork provisions.

Method of assessment

The qualification will be assessed by your tutor and assessor using a range of methods. This will include direct observations in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence and written assignments.

Additional costs
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.

Entry requirements

You will need to be in paid employment in the childcare sector.
