This is a new qualification developed for individuals aged 16+ working in or intending to work in the health and social care sector.
It is a broad introduction to the industry to support you to progress into employment or further education and training.
The qualification will provide a thorough introduction to the principles, values and knowledge needed to work in the health and social care sectors with adults, and children and young people. It will provide you with knowledge and understanding of ways of working in health and social care which informs effective practice within this sector. As part of this course, you will also follow a literacy and numeracy skills pathway. This will include Essential Skills Wales Qualification, Agored or GCSE maths/numeracy and English, if you do not have a grade C.

As part of the course you will be required to attend a work placement for 60 hours. This is an integral and mandatory part of completing the course.

This qualification will support you to progress into further study, including the following qualifications within the suite of health and social care, and childcare qualifications for Wales:
Level two health and social care: practice (adults)
Level two health and social care: principles and contexts (adults, children and young people)
Level three health and social care: practice (adults)
Level three health and social care: practice (children and young people)
Level three certificate and diploma in health and social care: principles and contexts
The qualification also supports opportunities into employment. However, it should be noted that in addition to the core qualification, a level two or three health and social care practice qualification is also a requirement for practice.
Method of Assessment
Continuous assessment including four internal scenario-based assessments (four internal scenario based assessments for the adults and children and young people pathway) and one externally-set and marked multiple choice test.
Entry Requirements
You will need a good reference and suitability for this course will be discussed at interview.
For the level two course will need to have a minimum of two GCSEs at grades A* to C including English language or Welsh first language. Mathematics needs to be at grade E or above.
Learners progressing from a course at Coleg Sir Gâr will have different entry requirements to include successful completion and engagement on the current programme of study, proven skills development, good attendance levels and a positive reference.
