Programme Description

Progress into an exciting career in the hospiality and tourism industry.This course provides a gateway into one of the fastest growing industries both locally and nationally. Some students use this course as a stepping-stone into a course in travel and tourism; others may select the hospitality industry as their pathway, others use the skills acquired to progress into employment or an apprenticeship. The course will provide opportunities to develop a whole range of personal skills and techniques and attributes, essential for successful performance in the hospitality and tourism industry and working life.

Programme Features

A central element of the course is the work related experience and the close partnership with the local hospitality and tourism industry. All learners have the opportunity to help operate the service at Merlins, the on site training restaurant. Here you will gain a realistic view of the demands of working in the hospitality industry in a safe and supportive environment. The hands on experience in the training restaurant provides ample opportunity to put skills into practice in a working environment.You will  explore the tourism industry through trips to local visitor attractions. You will also be able to put theory into practice by supporting events in partnership with the local hospitality and tourism industry. 

Progression and Employment

This course will develop your confidence and communication skills. Your experiences on the course will help you understand the hospitality and tourism sector and the potential pathways available for you to follow. Successful completion of the course will enable you to progress to higher-level courses such as the Level 3 Travel and Tourism programme, Level 3 Hospitality Services, to an apprenticeship in the industry or into employment. The course also provides skills, which can be useful in a wide variety of occupations.

Programme Content

On a Level 2 Hospitality and Tourism course, you will study a variety of units. Core units revolve around maintaining a safe, hygienic and secure working environment, working effectively as part of a hospitality team and giving customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation. 

Optional units cover a wide range of topics including preparing tables, preparing and serving food and drinks, dealing with bookings, customer arrivals and payments.

You will also further develop your literacy and numeracy through GCSE English or Maths or through Essential Skills Qualifications in Communication or Application of Number.

Method of Assessment

The majority of units are assessed through observation of practical work in Merlins restaurant and successful completion of underpinning knowledge questions. These may be in a written format or recorded using media platforms. There are also short on line tests to complete.

Entry Requirements

You will need a minimum of 2 GCSE grades A*-C to study this course. One of these must be English, first language Welsh or Maths. You can also progress from a Level 1 Travel and Tourism or Introduction to Professional Cookery and Food Service course.
