This Fine Art- Painting, Drawing and Printmaking degree teaches students how to manipulate paint, drawing and printmaking in small workshops; studying traditional subject matters such as still-life and figure painting. Students attend workshops in the first year, learning through experimentation in a fun and inclusive teaching environment. All students learn and develop representational drawing skills through close observation of real life. This is given equal significance to conceptual approaches to making contemporary fine art.

Individual approaches are supported by lecturers whose own practices include: painting, drawing, printmaking, installation, site-specific art and cross-disciplinary fine art. All strands embrace the expansive field of fine art practice to enable specialisation and to address individual preferences. You can engage with the possibility of working across boundaries and technologies to pursue your personal interests and skills. Dialogue is encouraged between departments, offering opportunities for collaboration and exciting interaction.

Programme Features

You will study in a traditional purpose built art school. The artists who you will work with are professionals with ongoing and international exhibition profiles. Our art school offers you individual workspaces and specific studios for life-drawing, painting, and a dedicated print studio for woodblock, stone lithography and etching.

The course supports the development of your studio practice with an emphasis on craft and skill. Lectures and contextual dialogue enables you to position yourself and your practice in terms of art history and contemporary critical thought, so that you will be equipped with the tools to map and research your own interests. Frequent opportunities for public exhibitions and events prepare you professionally for a wide range of potential careers. All these skills are transferable across a range of professional contexts. This taught creative thinking ability associated with fine art practice is becoming increasingly important in the world of commerce and business.

Programme content

Year 1 – A skills based year delivered through a series of tutor led workshops and independent study.

Year 2 – A developmental year devised to allow you to apply the skills gained in year one to identify personal strengths and areas of interest within a range of industry relevant contexts.

Year 3 – A personal negotiated brief which allows you to consolidate your practice and build a portfolio in preparation for future progression and personal ambitions, culminating in an opportunity to showcase your work in a final degree show.

Self-employed artist, entrepreneur, educator, scene designer, art therapist, public sector worker, exhibition curator, art critique / journalist, art-researcher, post graduate study (MA, PhD), philosopher, innovator etc.

Method of assessment

Assessment is on-going through workshop plenary-sessions, critiques, formative and summative assessment including aural and written feedback.

Entry requirements

Tariff score points accepted: A minimum of 96 points or equivalent portfolio ability for mature applicants.

Selection procedures

All applicants need to apply online through UCAS, our UCAS Institution code is C22 and course code is W101. Offers will be made based on the UCAS application, predicted grades (if applicable), UCAS reference and one-to-one interview. Programme Directors interview every applicant and discuss your portfolio of artwork and ambitions with you. This is a vital part of our selection process to ensure that the course is right for you and you are right for the course. Due to developing a relationship with you from the start our student withdrawal rates are minimal. We continuously strive to turn students into successful professional practitioners.

Mature applicants with relevant prior experience are welcome and are considered on an individual basis. International students will be interviewed by video conferencing.

Additional costs

There is no additional Studio fee. However, it is likely that you will incur additional costs for specialist materials, printing and for course related excursions.

Graduate Attributes Framework
