This programme is unique and established within the UK providing the opportunity to study fine art sculpture through traditional and digital material practices. The BA (Hons) Fine Art Sculpture programme enables an investigation of sculpture’s status in the contemporary fine art world and its continually evolving position due to social and political factors. The local landscape plays an insightful role in our delivery through site specific, installation, performance and land art practice. This will encourage and enable you to formulate experimental approaches through a multitude of art forms. Methods and material workshops are taught hands-on valuing the importance of thinking through making.

The first year is structured around skill based enquiry of a broad range of materials and processes in dedicated workshops with small group sizes, learning through practical experience in a safe inclusive environment. In the second and third year you will express and explore your artistic, social and personal interests independently and critically informed by focussed research facilitated by tutors who are recognised specialists in their field.

All students embrace the expansive field of fine art through lectures on its history, culture and contemporary position. This is supported through discussion of your work in one to one tutorials, seminars, group and cross-course crits. You will learn transferable skills for employability within the creative industries: many former students have well-established careers regionally, nationally and internationally. Dialogue is encouraged between departments, offering opportunities for collaborative working and socially engaged art practice. Students will also have formed a confident critical language in response to contemporary art practice by the end of their studies.

The tutors who you will work with are professional artists with ongoing international exhibition profiles. Our art school offers you individual studios and workshops for life-drawing, a foundry for metal casting in aluminium, bronze and iron, woodwork, plaster work, stone and wood carving and digital sculpture. The course supports the development of your studio practice with an emphasis on learning the craft and skill of making sculpture. Lectures and contextual dialogue enable you to position yourself and your practice in terms of art history and contemporary critical thought, in order to equip you with tools to map and research your own interests.

Frequent opportunities for public exhibitions and conferences in the UK and abroad prepare you professionally for a wide range of potential careers.

All these skills are transferable across a range of professional contexts. This taught creative thinking ability associated with fine art sculptural practice is becoming increasingly important in the world of commerce and business.

Programme content

Year 1 – A skills based year delivered through a series of tutor led workshops and independent study.

Year 2 – A developmental year devised to allow you to apply the skills gained in year one to identify personal strengths and areas of interest within a range of industry relevant contexts.

Year 3 – A personal negotiated brief which allows you to consolidate your practice and build a portfolio in preparation for future progression and personal ambitions, culminating in an opportunity to showcase your work in a final degree show.

Self-employed sculptor / artist, artist’s assistant, entrepreneur, scene designer, art therapist, set builder, public sector worker, educator, exhibition curator, art critique / journalist researcher, post-graduate study (MA, PhD), philosopher, innovator etc.

Method of assessment

Assessment is on-going through workshop plenary sessions, critiques, formative and summative assessment with aural and written feedback.

Entry requirements

Tariff score points accepted: A minimum of 96 points or equivalent portfolio ability for mature applicants.

Selection procedures

All applicants need to apply online through UCAS, our UCAS Institution code is C22 and course code is W130. Offers will be made based on the UCAS application, predicted grades (if applicable), UCAS reference and one to one interview. Programme Directors interview every applicant and discuss your portfolio of artwork and ambitions with you. This is a vital part of our selection process to ensure that the course is right for you and you are right for the course. Due to developing a relationship with you from the start our drop-out rates are minimal. As we continuously strive to turn students into successful professional practitioners.

Mature applicants with relevant prior experience are welcome and are considered on an individual basis. International students will be interviewed by video conferencing.

Additional costs

There is no additional Studio fee. However, it is likely that you will incur additional costs for specialist materials, printing and for course related excursions.

Graduate Attributes Framework

You’ll study up to 40 credits per level throughout your programme from the Graduate Attributes Framework. The Graduate Attribute modules are designed to enable you to develop, and evidence, a range of career-focused skills related to your subject area.
