This is a very flexible and exciting way to study where the learner can develop their own course from the areas of art and design that interest them.

A recent addition to our portfolio of university level programmes is the certificate of higher education.

This is a level four stand alone qualification that is basically the first year of our degree programmes. The course will enable those students who are unable to commit to studying for a full BA Honours degree to have an understanding of, and learn the basic skills required in their chosen subject.

The multidisciplinary in art and design course enables students to develop their own bespoke course, selecting a combination of modules chosen from two of our specialist degrees targeting their own specific talents and interests. For example, sculpture and digital illustration; fashion and textiles; ceramics and jewellery and photography.

Programme Features

Carmarthen School of Art is known for its ‘family’ atmosphere, and open door policy where students are encouraged to discuss proposed modules with experienced tutors before formalising their programme of study. Class sizes are small and tutor contact is second to none. Please refer to Programme Descriptor and Features specific to your two chosen specialist Certificate of Higher Education departments for further information.

Lectures and contextual dialogue enables you to position yourself and your practice in terms of art history and contemporary critical thought, so that you will be equipped with the tools to map and research your own interests.

Programme content

A skills based year delivered through a series of workshops, some compulsory and some students then select across their two chosen disciplines. Compulsory modules cover Developing Visual Language, Learning in the Digital Era and Creative Project. For the optional modules please refer to the programme content detail of the two specialist degrees you are interested in.

Progression and employment

Once you have successfully completed the Certificate of Higher Education, you could progress to level 5 of the full degree if you choses to do so.

Upon completing the full BA (Hons) Degree (years 2 & 3) This is influenced by the specialist fields of the two chosen degree programmes. Freelance artist or designer with the potential for mixed media practice, entrepreneur, educator, design management, community artist, events management, art therapist, arts administration exhibition curator, post-graduate study (MA, PhD), etc.
