Clearing FAQs
Clearing is a process where students can apply directly to the university or college of their choice for a course. Clearing only takes place once a year and starts on the day that the A Level results come out, 10th August, and lasts until mid September.
Clearing is for you if your original options have been closed down, either because your firm and insurance choice universities have rejected you, because your results were lower than expected, or because you have declined all offers, possibly because your results were better than expected. Essentially, Clearing represents a new search on a blank sheet of paper. You can't keep original options open and go into Clearing. People whose original UCAS applications were too late also go straight into the Clearing system.
The best place to check your status is the Track system on the UCAS site - http://www.ucas.com/. Track will automatically notice if you fit the Clearing bill and it will show your Clearing number.
Any ones you like. This is a new start. You don't have to confine yourself to subjects and courses similar to your original choices. However, you'll need to make a decision about what type of course you're aiming at. To do this, talk it through with teachers or careers advisors at school or college.
Each year some applicants gain better exam results than were predicted or expected. The Adjustment Period allows applicants who have met and exceeded the conditions of their firm choice offer to reconsider where and what to study. This means we can consider you for a place, on a course with vacancies, whilst you retain your offer at your chosen institution. You only lose your original offer at your original chosen institution once you formally accept an offer at another institution, within the 5 day adjustment period.
Adjustment is available from A Level results day (10th August) until 1 September. An individual’s Adjustment period (5 calendar days) starts when their conditional firm (CF) choice changes to unconditional firm (UF) or on the 10th August, whichever is later.
For more details about the Adjustment Period and to register for Adjustment please visit the UCAS website.
The important thing to remember is that you can phone us direct at Coleg Sir Gar and many other universities or colleges from 16th August to see what is available, so it pays to think about what kind of course you want to do and where. Then just pick up the phone - the UCAS website has a guide to Clearing at http://www.ucas.com/ or have a look through this website to see what is available at Colegsirgar.ac.uk
If you phone the College you will speak to firstly Admissions who will then put you through to the academic member of staff in the subject area that you want to study. They will be able to give you advice and in most cases they will be able to give you an instant decision. But don't feel pressurised to accept the first offer you get. You can always explain that you're looking at a few other options and make an arrangement to call back later. We at Coleg Sir Gar know that students are juggling possibilities at this stage and it's in everyone's interests that people choose courses that they're best suited for.

You will be able to contact Admissions on the following times:
Monday to Thursday from 8.45am – 5pm
and on Friday 8.45am – 4.30pm
Yes - simply send an email to us: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Remember to include the word Clearing in the subject.
Firstly check with your chosen university or college to confirm that they are not offering you a place - don't just assume that because you didn't get the grades that they won't accept you. If they won't accept you, then you will need to look for alternative courses to study, perhaps at a different university, and phone around. A useful thing to remember is that when you phone, have your Clearing number handy.
We will send you a letter straight away confirming your place and asking you to send your original Clearing entry form, if you have one, back to us. If you have not previously applied to UCAS this year, we will send you a UCAS Record of Prior Acceptance form for you to fill in and send back to us.
