Programme Description

This course provides a broad base of computing knowledge and applications.

You can study 60 to 180 credits, from certificate level to the full extended diploma over one to two years. 

It is assessed through exams, controlled assessments and coursework and is suitable for 16 to 19 year old students wishing to work in the computing and IT field or progress to university level.

Option 1:  Foundation Diploma in Computing (one year) plus Welsh Baccalaureate and progression to year two Extended Diploma

Option 2: Enhanced IT Programme Foundation Diploma in Computing (one year) plus Diploma in Professional Competence (NVQ –level 3 Apprenticeship), which also includes 5-12 weeks work placement – progression to level 4 Apprenticeship.

Programme Features

This course provides nationally recognised training for Computing and IT practitioners employed in systems support, analysis and design, software testing, network administration and so on. 

It provides a recognised progression route to higher education  such as studying a HND or degree in computing or associated subjects.  You will receive a sound underpinning knowledge of computer theory with practical application. 

Programme Content

Modules will include:

Principles of computer science, fundamentals of computer systems, planning and management of computer projects, software design and development project, IT systems security and encryption, digital graphics and animation and website development.

Progression & Employment

This course provides a broad base of computing knowledge and applications for learners wishing to enter a career as a Computing/IT practitioner or technician in the area of computer systems, software development, networking, spreadsheet modelling, information systems, website production and digital graphics. 

The qualification also provides opportunities to progress to higher education qualifications.  Coleg Sir Gâr delivers a HNC and BSc in applied computing which can be studied full-time or part-time.

Option 1:

Progress to HND/BSc full-time student or HNC part-time student.

Option 2:

Progress to HNC and complete an NVQ level 4 on a full apprenticeship, with an option to top-up to HND/BSc.

Method of Assessment

Two written exams (units 1 and 2)

Two controlled assessment (units 3 and 4)


Entry Requirements

You will normally need to have at least one of the following: A BTEC first diploma in IT (minimum of two GCSE at grades A*to C) or at least five GCSEs at grades A* to C including maths and English at a minimum of C grades.

Additional Costs

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £45 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
