Programme Description

This Level 2 diploma develops 1st and 2nd fix carpentry skills along with maintenance activities and circular saw use. It allows students to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in carpentry or joinery. You will complete a variety of carpentry related tasks that are undertaken in industry and safely use various hand and power tools. Principals of building construction, information and communication unit will also provide you with an introduction to construction technology.

Programme Features

This course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge of students enabling them to work in the industry in their chosen craft.

It has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions and the tests are based on the learner showing what they can do as an individual.

The course is delivered by highly qualified and experienced staff using modern facilities.

As part of the programme learners will also complete Essential Skills.

Opportunities will also be provided for GCSEs in Welsh, English and Mathematics and for welsh language development.

Progression and Employment

Students will be able to progress onto an apprenticeship programme subject interview and employment of which will provide further development and understanding of the construction industry.

Programme Content

Each unit comprises of two parts that cover subject knowledge and practical skills:

Health and Safety and welfare in construction

Principles of building construction, information and communication

Carry out 1st fix flooring and roofing

Carry out 1st fix frames, partitions and stairs

Carry out 2nd fixing operations

Carry out carpentry maintenance

Set up and operate a circular saw

This course also includes Essential Skills Qualifications delivery.

 

Method of Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used which include written knowledge questions, online and practical skills tests.

Entry Requirements

Formal interview and ideally students will have completed a L1 diploma in Carpentry and Joinery and have good levels of literacy and numeracy.  Consideration will also be given to mature students subject to formal interview. Applicants should have an interest in the chosen craft and evidence of practical ability would be an advantage.
