Programme Description

This Level 1 diploma introduces students to carpentry and joinery skills. It allows students to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in carpentry or joinery. You will produce a variety of carpentry related woodworking joints used within the industry and safely use various hand and power tools. Principals of building construction, information and communication unit will also provide you with an introduction to construction technology. 


Programme Features

  • This course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge of students enabling them to work in the industry in their chosen craft.
  • It has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions and the tests are based on the learner showing what they can do as an individual.
  • The course is delivered by highly qualified and experienced staff using modern facilities.
  • As part of the programme learners will also complete Essential Skills.
  • Opportunities will also be provided for GCSEs in Welsh, English and Mathematics and for welsh language development.

Progression and Employment

Progression oppurtunites include apprenticeships or a full time level two diploma qualification that will provide further development and understanding of the construction industry. 

Programme Content

Each unit comprises of two parts that cover subject knowledge and practical skills:

  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
  • Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
  • Produce woodworking joints
  • Health and Safety and welfare in construction

This course also includes Essential Skills Qualifications delivery. 

Method of Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used which include written knowledge questions, online and  practical skills tests. 

Entry Requirements

Although there are no formal entry requirements, students will need to have a good level of numeracy and literacy skills.  Applicants should have an interest in the  chosen craft and evidence of practical ability would be an advantage.
