This course will provide you with the broad and extensive subject knowledge that will cover a wide range of composition and production techniques using industry standard software and a variety of hardware instruments and processors.
These practical experiences will allow you to build a portfolio that promotes yourself for higher education, apprenticeships or employment. You will gain practical skills that will build your confidence in your creative exploration, which will give you the necessary skills receiving first-rate practical experiences.
This course focuses on providing you with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to higher education and ultimately employment. Our L3 Course will teach you the technical and performance skills to make your work stand out and give you the knowledge and inspiration to explore your own music ideas. With a focus on the practical work, you will create your own music compositions in our live recording studio spaces or using state of the art software and technology in our fully equipped MAC suites. The department houses the Roland Music Academy as well as rehearsal and performance rooms.
Students also have access to the 120-seat new theatre space for their learning and practice. Our music department has strong connections right across the industry, so you will benefit from industry specialists and networking opportunities. You will also have the chance to enter National competitions as well as taking part in our Music Performance Academies and working with visiting industry practitioners.
In a subject area that covers an incredible range of topics and disciplines, employability is a key factor incorporated into the course. We are dedicated to providing you with the necessary skills and knowledge to progress to higher-level courses or employment.
The growth in digital technology has resulted in an increase in job roles and it is an extremely exciting time for Creative Industries within Wales. This course will provide you with the transferable skills that could lead you to training in a wide variety of occupations such as musician, sound engineer, sound technician, music therapist or a teacher.
Learners with suitable grades at Level 2 can progress to the Level 3 courses in Music Technology.
The Level 2 RSL Diploma for Music Practitioners course consists of units, which cover for example:
This course also includes either the Welsh Baccalaureate National (Post-16) or Essential Skills plus a Welsh language unit and Employability Skills.
The course is continuously assessed and will include assignments both theoretically and practically.
All applicants will need to attend an interview and demonstrate ability level.

An applicant for the Level 2 will need to have a minimum of 4 GCSEs grades A* - C- Either being Maths or English
English and Maths are an integral part of the course. Students who do not yet have the necessary grades at C or above will have additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills depending on prior GCSE grades.
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £45 prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
