This course provides access to a career in one of the fastest growing industries both locally and nationally. 

Traditionally the level three 90 credit introductory diploma forms the first year of a two year programme.

Upon successful completion of this course, the majority of learners progress onto a level three extended diploma in travel and tourism (equivalent to three A-levels). Some learners progress directly into higher education and others to employment.

The course will provide opportunities to develop a whole range of personal skills, techniques and attributes, essential for successful performance in the tourism industry and working life.

Programme Features

A central element of the course is the close partnership with the local and international tourism industry. You will gain a realistic view of the demands of working in the travel and tourism industry in a stimulating and exciting environment. You will have the opportunity to explore the industry through trips to visitor attractions and tourism businesses at home and abroad. You will also be able to put theory into practice supporting events in partnership with the local tourism industry.

Programme content

On a Level 3 Introductory Diploma in Travel and Tourism you will study a variety of units. Topics will include a selection from the following units

  • Unit 1 The UK travel and tourism industry
  • Unit 2 Customer service in travel and tourism
  • Unit 3 Preparing for a career in travel and tourism
  • Unit 4 Travel and tourism destinations
  • Unit 5 UK visitor attractions
  • Unit 6 Hospitality in travel and tourism
  • Unit 8 UK tour operations
  • Unit 10 The UK conference and event industry
  • Unit 11 Marketing for travel and tourism
  • Unit 13 Resort representative roles and responsibilities 94
  • Unit 14 Investigating airline cabin crew
  • Unit 15 UK airports
  • Unit 17 The cruise industry 115
  • Unit 18 UK heritage tourist attractions
  • Unit 19 Responsible tourism
  • Unit 20 Specialist tourism
  • Unit 21 Business travel
  • Unit 23 Tour guiding

You will also develop your literacy and numeracy through GCSE English or maths.

Upon successful completion of this course, the majority of learners progress onto a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism. Some learners progress directly into higher education and others to employment.

The course will provide opportunities to develop a whole range of personal skills, techniques and attributes, essential for successful performance in the tourism industry and working life.

Method of assessment

All units are assessed internally using centre devised assessments. These can include observation in work related situations, presentations, projects, or extended writing.

This qualification is available to be assessed through the medium of English only.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grades A*-C, to include English language or Welsh (first language) and maths. Or successful completion of a level two qualification in a relevant vocational subject at merit or above.

All students are assessed on an individual basis and will be offered the opportunity to attend an interview.

Additional costs

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment. 

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
