Higher Apprenticeship in Agriculture

A higher apprenticeship is a work based learning programme at level four where the learner is earning while learning. The agricultural management pathway is appropriate for unit managers who have responsibility for the management of a particular enterprise, for example sheep or beef.

The agricultural business management pathway is appropriate for an assistant farm manager who assists a farm manager in the management of a farm. The apprentice will be employed or self employed and will receive at least the minimum apprentice wage. Delivery may include attendance at college one day a week, short block release or distance learning. The learner should achieve the level four apprenticeship framework within the agreed timescale.

Programme Features
  • All learners will be supported by a training adviser/assessor who will monitor progress towards achieving targets on a regular basis (every 56 to 61 days)
  • The training adviser/assessor will liaise closely with the employer to ensure that qualifications are achieved within the timescale
  • The training adviser/assessor will assess the apprentice in the workplace as and when required (every 56 to 61 days)
Programme content
  • City & Guilds Level 4 Diploma in Work-based Agricultural Business Management
  • Essential Skills must be achieved in order for a successful completion
  • Essential Skills Wales Application of Number Level 2
  • Essential Skills Wales Communication Level 2
  • Essential Skills Wales Digital Literacy Level 2
  • In some circumstances previously achieved proxy qualifications may be used
Progression and employment

Learners who successfully complete this higher apprenticeship can progress onto other higher education courses.

Method of assessment

Coursework, assignments, work based observations and work based evidence.

Entry requirements

The agriculture industry want the entry requirements for the higher apprenticeship to be flexible, so therefore has suggested that one of the following should be completed:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Work-based Agriculture
  • Level 3 Certificate in Work-based Agriculture
  • Level 3 Award in Agriculture
  • Level 3 Extended Certificate in Agriculture
  • Level 3 Diploma in Agriculture
  • Level 3 Certificate in Pig Husbandry Skills
  • Level 3 Apprenticeship in Agriculture
  • Level 3 NVQ in Agriculture Crops/Livestock
  • Good range of practical experience within the Agriculture Industry
  • Voluntary work within the Agricultural Industry
  • 5 GCSEs (A*-C)
  • 2 AS/A Levels

Training advisers will undertake an initial interview and learners will complete a basic skills screener in order to ensure they are suited on the correct level one, two, three or four.
