Coleg Sir Gâr, together with Coleg Ceredigion and University of Wales Trinity St David, form the region’s largest provider for apprenticeships offering a diverse range of training programmes supporting small private companies, large multi-national organisations and the public sector.
The Apprenticeship Traineeship programme, led by the Welsh Government, is a funding programme supported by the European Social Fund. These work based training programmes involve learners, of any age, developing and upskilling whilst training on the job.
Apprenticeships are designed by employers to reflect the current market and industry needs. They offer a structured programme which provides your Apprentice with the skills needed to do the job well. Employees will work towards their Apprenticeship qualification by studying technical skills and carrying out practical assessments.
Anyone employed and over the age of 16, who is not in full-time education. Apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Off the job, usually on a day-release basis, apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications.
It is important to remember that Apprentices can be both new or existing employees and there is no need to change the job description or terms of conditions when applying for Apprenticeship funding for existing employees.
Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level, the Apprentices’ ability and the industry sector. You can also remain an apprentice when progressing from one qualification to another.
There are different levels of Apprenticeships:
Entry requirements are flexible because Apprenticeships aren’t just based on academic achievement. Practical skills and the level of interest you demonstrate are all taken into account. An apprentice can inject new ideas, energy and talent into your business and it has been proven that apprentices contribute to the competitiveness of organisations. Apprentices are keen to learn, are highly motivated and by creating apprentice roles, you will be opening the door to innovation and adding value to your business.
Whilst an employee of any age can apply for enrolment onto an Apprenticeship programme, those under the age of 25 may not need to pay Employers NI Contributions (Click here for more information )
Apprenticeships help to ensure that your workforce have the practical skills as well as the qualifications to meet the needs of your business both today and in the future.
Any employer can employ an apprentice. You need to be in a position to pay the apprentice minimum wage and to employ the apprentice for at least 16 hours per week.
There are currently Welsh Government incentives that you may be able to access if eligible to help with these employment costs.
A Traineeship programme will give you the support, skills and qualifications you need to progress into employment, an Apprenticeship or to go into learning at a higher level
