Mechanical engineering is a diverse and dynamic field that encompasses the design, analysis, and manufacturing of mechanical systems and devices. It combines scientific principles with creative problem-solving skills to create innovative solutions that impact various industries.

The general aim of this award is to develop the thinking, practical and personal skills of the student to the best of their ability. The award will enable students to make a contribution to the mechanical and manufacturing engineering profession at senior technician level. The part-time, two year award will also enable students working in the industry to broaden their skills base beyond the horizons of their existing employment and thus enhance their career prospects.

  • Train technician engineers to a level that will enable them to function effectively in the mechanical and manufacturing engineering professions
Programme content

Example course units include: Design and Manufacture Professional Practice for Engineers, Engineering Mathematics, Mechanical Science, Thermo Fluids, Materials, Project, Business Management and Electrical Technology for Mechanical Engineers.

Progression and employment

Successful completion of the HNC will qualify students for entry to HND / degree courses in related subjects. Careers that are directly related to this discipline include: Mechanical Development Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer, Production Engineer (Technical Sales). Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineers are employed by the manufacturing industry, service industries, the armed forces and research organisations.

Method of assessment

Assessment for this award is by means of assignments and end of module examinations. Students are also assessed in a range of common skills within their technical modules.

This qualification is available to be assessed through the medium of English only.

Entry requirements

National Diploma Level 3 in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or similar, or A levels in 2 suitable subjects (e.g. maths, science, computing) grade C or above. GCSE maths, English and a science grade C or above.

Additional costs

Higher education fees apply and any additional costs are determined annually by the college. For academic year 2023-24 the fees are: 1st Year £2,196, 2nd Year £2,097.

The learner will also be required to provide their own stationary and basic classroom equipment appropriate to their course (eg pens and a calculator).
