The course units, outcomes and delivery:
Enable learners to demonstrate an appropriate level of problem solving skills as the basis for personal and professional development, so that they can work in a team, thereby contributing to their work environment.
Allow learners to apply their knowledge and understanding of engineering analysis and scientific principles.
Promotes an awareness of the management of quality, health and safety systems, environmental and sustainability issues.
Allows learners to process and analyse the information gained from laboratory work and project work for the solution of engineering problems.
Develops skills in information technology as applied to engineering and demonstrate competence in oral and written skills, enabling learners to work effectively as a team member.
Encourages learners to identify their own learning needs to enable them to progress and improve their educational base for professional development.
Develops a professional attitude in students towards their responsibilities as engineers to society.
Example course units include: Design and Manufacture, Electrical Technology for Mechanical Engineers, Professional Practice for Engineers, Engineering Mathematics 1, Mechanical Science 1, Thermo fluids 1, Materials, Project, Business, Safety and Employability, Thermo fluids 2, Mechanical Science 2, Engineering Mathematics 2, Instrumentation and Control, Engineering Design and Automated Technology.
Successful completion of the HND to a satisfactory standard will qualify students for entry to degree courses in related subjects within the UWTSD group. Careers that are directly related to this discipline include Mechanical Development Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer, Production Engineer and Technical Sales. Mechanical / Manufacturing Engineers are employed by the manufacturing industry, service industries, the armed forces and research organisations.
Assessment is by means of assignments and end of module examinations. Students are also assessed in a range of common skills within their technical modules.
In addition to five GCSE subjects at grade C or above, preferably to include Mathematics, English and a Science, the following minimum criteria will apply:
GCE A/AS level, AS VCE single or double award, VRQ L3 Extended Diploma in an appropriate discipline, or a minimum of two A Levels or equivalent. Acceptable A level or equivalent subjects are Mathematics or a numerate Science such as Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Geography, Design Technology or Engineering.
Level 3 National Certificate/Diploma/Extended Diploma, typically in Mechanical Engineering. Grades PP/PPP respectively, to include a Mathematics module and an additional analytical module such as Mechanics or Environmental Science.
Top up from a Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering.
Higher education fees apply and any additional costs are determined annually by the college.
The learner will also be required to provide their own stationary and basic classroom equipment appropriate to their course (eg pens and a calculator).
