Hairdressing Level 3

Programme Description



This level three vocational qualification is designed to further develop your hairdressing skills and techniques which you gained at level two. 

You will continue to build your confidence and creativity in a real salon environment working on clients as well as learning how to advise clients on suitable hair treatments and products. 

This one-year full-time course is a high-level qualification expanding on the hairdressing  skills learnt on level two. It will give you the advanced practical hair skills provided for further career progression in the hairdressing industry.  

This intense course combines theory and hands on experience and you will be assessed on completing practical skills tests and written assignments, which will run alongside the modules you are studying. 

You will also have the opportunity to undertake an external placement, which will enhance your employability prospects even further. 

A focus on excellent customer care and good communication will help develop you for a career in hairdressing, with our expert team supporting you to improve and develop your skills to help you move up the career ladder.


Programme Features



The college runs a commercial training salon which is open to the public, providing you with a real working environment and allowing you to gain a sense of how it will feel to work in the industry. 

There is also an emphasis on supporting you in becoming an independent learner through individual planning, target setting and development. 

You will be involved in a thriving programme of activities including trips and events as well as taking part in national competitions which can progress to international competitions supported by Skills Competitions Wales and WorldSkills UK. 

This is a full-time course and you will be expected to work in the college’s commercial salon one night a week.


Progression & Employment



After successfully completing the course, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to progress into employment within a salon or explore self-employment.

After completion a level three qualification you may even wish to apply for working on  cruise ships - carrying out hair treatments alongside travelling the world. There are also other exciting opportunities to work in various salon chains across the world within countries as far as Dubai and Bermuda.

Undertaking the right training at the start of your career is a great long-term investment in your career prospects.


Programme Content



This course consists of mandatory and optional units delivered over one year. 

  • Creatively style and dress hair
  • Creatively colour and lighten hair
  • Develop, enhance and evaluate your creative hairdressing skills

Alongside your main qualification, you will be given the opportunity to improve your grades by either taking GCSE resits or Essential Skills in both literacy and numeracy, which will enable you to progress on to further courses and develop your confidence and career opportunities.

As part of this programme the following methods of assessment will be used:

  • Practical examination
  • Continuous assessments
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Written assessments

Programme Entry Requirements



Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview however a positive attitude to learning a vocational skill is required. 

We require a minimum of five GCSEs at grades A* to C, which includes either English language or Welsh (first language) and maths.  

Those with a level two qualification are also able to progress to this course. 

English and maths are an integral part of the course and students who do not yet have the necessary grades at grade C or above will receive additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills depending on prior GCSE grades.


Additional Costs



You will have access to a range of equipment and resources at college but in addition, consumable products and a uniform will need to be purchased. This information will be given prior to your start date and can be advised at interview.

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £45 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits relating to your course.
