Young carers welcomed at college

Young carers from Llanelli schools have been welcomed at Coleg Sir Gâr where Carmarthenshire Young Adult Carers (YAC) offered support and information.

Children from Coedcae, Glan y Mor and St John Lloyd attended the event to share their experiences and learn that there is help and support available.

Running the Young Carers Club at Coleg Sir Gâr, 17 year-old Shaughn Poulter was keen to be involved. “As a student it can be difficult to juggle college work and a caring role,” he said. “Speaking with others in the same situation can help and the event’s message was for young people who are carers, there is support out there.”

There are an estimated 1,268 young adult carers in Carmarthenshire with Wales having the highest proportion of under 18s in the UK at around 2.6%.

Mechanical engineering student Shaughn Poulter added: “The aim of the event was also to show schoolchildren that when they go to college, they are not abandoned, the college is supportive and it is manageable to be a carer and access further education and if help is needed, it’s there.”
