Triple win for computing skills
Coleg Sir Gâr computing students are celebrating a triple win with three top awards won in a Skills Competition Wales event held in Cardiff.
Up against six other colleges, Nathan Hudson won silver in the IT Software Solutions for Business (ITSSB) and Tyler Whitcombe won gold.
Kieran Davies took the top spot in the IT Support Technician category by winning gold, progressing from his previous competition successes winning silver in the Welsh final of the advanced IT support technician category last December.
Former St John Lloyd pupil Nathan Hudson and former Strade student Tyler Whitcombe were competing for the first time and the experience has given them a confidence boost. “I achieved much more than I thought I would,” Said Nathan. “The competition has taught me to have a little bit more confidence in my abilities.”
Tyler Whitcombe added: “I was doubting myself at the beginning but it’s built my confidence and now I know I’ve got to try more new things.”
Denise Hudson, assistant curriculum head for engineering and computing at Coleg Sir Gâr also runs the ITSSB sessions of the college’s IT Academy. “I’m really proud of our students,” she said. “I think they’ve done an amazing job especially competing against so many other students of similar abilities, these results demonstrate their outstanding suitability for future employment.”
The trio may have an opportunity of competing at Birmingham’s WorldSkills UK Live if their results achieve a place in the Welsh final.
