College’s water safety campaign makes a splash at RNLI supported event

A water safety campaign has taken over at Coleg Sir Gâr with lots of important messages for those thinking about taking the splash into water sports.
Foundation students organised the event at Graig campus and the RNLI supported it offering advice and free practical merchandise and leaflets such as waterproof mobile phone holders enabling emergency services to be called if needed.

RNLI education presenters Dawn and Paul O’Keeffe were also on hand to encourage staff and students to take part in the ‘couch to lifeboat crew’ exercise where they raced against a clock to quickly put on the kit used to by crew to save lives at sea.
Lots of other activities were held such as fundraising for the RNLI with a competition, spot the danger at sea competition and practical demonstrations by outdoor adventure students.
Tanya Knight, a foundation lecturer who organised the campaign with her students, said: “We’re trying to share important information in a fun but informative way for students, so that they know what to do in a possible emergency.
“One of the campaigns is ‘Float to Live’ which gives essential advice on what to do if you fall into cold waters.
“Our foundation group is taking part in a ‘mental health voyage’ on the Challenge Wales ship as well so it made sense to link a safety campaign to the journey especially as we start to approach spring and summer when people will be wandering into warmer waters.”
