Equine Apprenticeship - Horse Care and Management Level 3

All learners will be supported by a training adviser/assessor who will monitor progress towards achieving targets on a regular basis (every 56 to 61 days). 

They will liaise closely with the employer to ensure that qualifications are achieved within the timescale. 

The apprentice will be assessed in the workplace as and when required (every 56 to 61 days). 

British Horse Society exams are recognised internationally as an industry standard.

The City & Guilds Work based diploma is an non-examined alternative pathway.

Learners will study at Coleg Sir Gar, a British Horse Society approved examination centre. Facilities include an indoor school, outdoor menage and stables accommodation with approximately 14 horses.

Learners following this Foundation Apprenticeship will have to achieve a framework of qualifications which will include either a BHSQ level three Certificate Horse Care and BHSQ level three Award in Principles of Horse Care or a City & Guilds level three diploma in work-based Horse Care and Management. 

Essential Skills must be achieved in order for a successful completion these are:  

• Essential Skills Wales Application of Number (Level 2) 
• Essential Skills Wales Communication (Level 2) 
• In some circumstances previously achieved proxy qualifications may be used eg GCSE maths and English at grade C or above).

Examples of units of study include:

• Feeding and Fittening Horses
• Anatomy andPhysiology
• Horse Health
• Grassland Care and stabling
• Lunging a fit horse for exercise
• Fit Tack and Equipment for competition

Learners who have successfully completed this apprenticeship can progress onto the equine higher apprenticeship at level four and students often progress in work to assistant or yard manager.

BHSQ Stage 3 Horse Knowledge and Care examination which can be undertaken at Coleg Sir Gar Pibwrlwyd   or a City & Guilds level three workbased diploma portfolio of evidence, assessed by college qualified staff both in the workplace and in college. Learners on either pathways  will be continually assessed both in the workplace and in college which will include coursework, assignments, practical work, work based evidence and observations.

• Level 2 Work Based Diploma in Horse Care
• Level 2 Work Based Diploma in Horse Care/Racehorse Care
• Level 2 Diploma for the Harness Horse Grooms
• Level 2 NVQ in Horse Care
• Pony Club B Test
