An apprenticeship is a work based learning programme where the learner is earning while learning. This programme is ideally suited to employees who have some element of responsibility within their job role. The programme is aimed at learners over the age of 16. The apprentice will be employed for a minimum of 16 hours a week and receive at least the minimum apprentice wage.
Learners on this programme have the option of two study pathways. Pathway one incorporates the British Horse Society qualification route and is exam based. The second pathway involves building a portfolio of evidence through a City & Guilds work based diploma.
The apprentice will attend college one day a week. In college, learners cover underpinning theoretical knowledge in horse care and specialist practical skills to equip learners for the workplace.Learners should achieve the level three apprenticeship framework within18 months.

Programme Features
All learners will be supported by a training adviser/assessor who will monitor progress towards achieving targets on a regular basis (every 56 to 61 days).
They will liaise closely with the employer to ensure that qualifications are achieved within the timescale.
The apprentice will be assessed in the workplace as and when required (every 56 to 61 days).
British Horse Society exams are recognised internationally as an industry standard.
The City & Guilds Work based diploma is an non-examined alternative pathway.
Learners will study at Coleg Sir Gar, a British Horse Society approved examination centre. Facilities include an indoor school, outdoor menage and stables accommodation with approximately 14 horses.
Programme Content
Learners following this Foundation Apprenticeship will have to achieve a framework of qualifications which will include either a BHSQ level three Certificate Horse Care and BHSQ level three Award in Principles of Horse Care or a City & Guilds level three diploma in work-based Horse Care and Management.

In some circumstances previously achieved proxy qualifications may be used eg GCSE maths and English at grade C or above).

Progression & Employment
Learners who have successfully completed this apprenticeship can progress onto the equine higher apprenticeship at level four and students often progress in work to assistant or yard manager.
Method of Assessment
BHSQ Stage 3 Horse Knowledge and Care examination which can be undertaken at Coleg Sir Gar Pibwrlwyd or a City & Guilds level three workbased diploma portfolio of evidence, assessed by college qualified staff both in the workplace and in college.Learners on either pathways will be continually assessed both in the workplace and in college which will include coursework, assignments, practical work, work based evidence and observations.

These programmes are part financed by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government.
British Horse Society Gold Membership is required.
Additional Costs
There is no additional fee whilst studying on the course other than the learner will be required to purchase aBritish Horse Society Gold Membership if undertaking BHS examinations. You will need to provide your own stationery and personal equipment. You may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
