Programme Description


This course has been developed to ensure that learners are prepared for work and further study in a fast developing skills sector.

The qualification is knowledge-based and designed for post-16 learners who want to develop a breadth and depth of knowledge related to the health and social care sector. It will provide a sound basis for learners who want to progress to higher education or to the workplace.

Alongside the Level 3 Principles and Contexts you will study the Skills Challenge Certificate or WJEC Diploma in Medical Science.

Programme Features


The qualifications will cover the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills required by the health and social care sectors.

Topics included are:

  • The principles and theories of human growth and development.
  • Common illnesses, diseases and disorders, and how they may be prevented and controlled.
  • Provision of health and social care: adults, children’s and young people’s services.
  • Promoting good health.
  • Understanding human behaviour – psychological theories and mental health.
  • Promoting the rights of adults, children and young people.

As part of the course you will be required to attend work placement.  This is an integral and a mandatory part of completing the course.


Programme Content


You will study the Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care Principles and Contexts.  Alongside this for the Social Care route you will study the Skills Challenge Certificate. For the Health route you will complete the Level 3 Diploma in Medical Science. These qualifications are the equivalent of 3 A-Levels.

  • Literacy and Numeracy development through various pathways: GCSE resits, Agored Qualifications, Essential Skills Wales and WEST
  • Be Active

Progression & Employment


Successful completion of the course and the Skills Challenge Certificate / Level 3 Diploma in Medical Science is the equivalent of three A levels and will enable you to progress to higher-level courses in areas including:

  • social care
  • early years
  • speech and language therapy
  • psychology
  • midwifery 
  • occupational health

Method of Assessment


The qualifications will be assessed through a combination of external written assessments and non-exam assessments.

Entry Requirements


All applicants will need a positive reference. Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview.

An applicant for the Level 3 course will need to have:

A minimum of 5 GCSEs grades A* - C including English language or Welsh first language. Mathematics needs to be grade E or above.

 In order to follow the Health route Maths and Science at a C+ grade will also be required.

Learners progressing from a course at Coleg Sir Gar will have different entry requirements to include - successful completion and engagement on the current programme of study, proven skills development, good attendance levels and will be in receipt of a positive reference.
